Beautiful antique lacquer letter box. Japenese Taisho era c 1914-1926
The box features the "maki-e" technique on the box and half of the lid: copper flakes to create a look of haze over water. The lid also features a golden phoenix with traditional floral scrolls on the other half. The small handles on either side discount of box are silver tone dogwood blossoms and held a cord that would wrap around the top and hold the lid in place. Sadly that cord is missing.
There are some chips and nicks in the lacquer (pictured), mostly on the corners of of the lid.
The box measures 9 1/4" x 3 3/8" x 1 5/8"
