The artists:
This collaborative design was created by four Kunwinjku daluk (women) artists: Priscilla Badari, Lynne Nadjowh, Sylvia Badari and Katra Nganjmirra.
The design:
This design shows all the animals living in the manlabarrl (freshwater billabong); wakih (freshwater shrimp), marrngunj (nail fish), kedjebe (file snake), ngalmangiyi (long-necked turtle), ngarderrhwo (shortneck turtle), kordbolbok (frog) and djalangkarridj-djalangkarridj (dragonflies). In Kudjewk (wet season) billabongs connect with rivers and floodplains and the fish and reptiles swim and move around. As the weather dries and water contracts to the billabongs they concentrate there again around March or April. When daluk (women) go hunting and gathering they often focus around billabongs. This highly detailed design shows the density of life to be found in the freshwater billabongs that are a rich source of food for the Kunwinjku Aboriginal people of West Arnhem Land. discount
