Morrisonite Jasper (or Morrison Ranch Jasper) hails from Malheur County in south eastern Oregon. The jasper was discount first discovered in the 1940s by a hermit-like character, James Morrison, on his ranch. When the jasper was first introduced to local rockhounds they were amazed at the bright colors and "egg-type" patterns some specimens featured. Some first thought it was a form of jade thanks to bright green samples. After study, it was understood Morrisonite was in fact a form of quartz (chalcedony), unique to this very small area. It was last mined in 1996 and is unlikely to be mined again. Lore has become part of its story, and as such is frequently referred to as, "the King of the Jaspers."
Let's talk about the stone. It is a free form triangular cabochon featuring blues and pinks, with some small, playful orb patterns. It measures approximately 54 mm x 50 mm at its widest points, and is 5 mm thick. It has a square bezel of approximately 1.75 mm to help with setting in a custom piece of jewellery. The back has been sanded clean. Curious pattern on this one, would look great set in silver as the focal point in a pendant.
