Casting off characteristics of traditional medal design, Modernist medallists during the early to mid-20th century created pieces with bold shapes and vivid colors. This artsy modernist medal dates from mid-twentieth century France centers on an imagery of Saint Denise, a 16-year-old virgin, arrested, tortured and beheaded at Lampsaque in Asia Minor, in 251. She was a martyr for her Christian faith.
A stylized cross is on the verso. The medal is crafted in bronze and decorated with glassy enamel in dark blue, white, black, and cream. It measures 1 1/2 inches in diameter and weighs in at 20.3 grams.
The medal is by Élie Pellegrin (1914-2001) a famous French sculptor born at the beginning of WWI into a devoutly Christian family. His staunch faith became a major influence in the wonderful art that he created during his life.
