Rare, highly collectible vintage 1950s SS Nestor Steamship Souvenir Sailor Doll. Made by Norah Wellings, England. SS Nestor was an ocean liner operated by the Union-Castle Line in service between Britain and South Africa during the mid 20th century. It is quite unusual to see one of these velvet sailor souvenir dolls with beige colored pants. This aesthetically pleasing doll is perfect to collect, display, or as a gift. Great for those who love dolls, cruising and vintage collectibles!
"Jolly Boy" and similar style sailor dolls were made popular in the late 1920's by Norah Wellings. They were later produced by Peggy Nisbit during the sixties and into the eighties. These cute little sailor boys were novelty souvenirs for cruise ships who sold them to passengers to commemorate their trip. The name of the vessel was printed on the hat band. Reminiscent of the kewpie dolls with their smiling faces, "Jolly Boy's" by Wellings and Nisbit are sought after collectibles.
Little sailor doll is made of quality materials with fine stitching. He is still smiling bright, showing off his cute dimples in both cheeks. He is wearing a white sailors cap, and a blue and beige velvet sailor suit trimmed with a blue collar and a white rope lanyard. His sailors cap is branded with 'SS Nestor', the name of the ship for which he was made as a souvenir for. He has stitched limbs and a discount hand painted face. Label still attached.
He is in very good vintage condition for his age and all his parts are present. Please note some age spots and discoloration are present. Size: 27 cm. Last photo for reference only of other sailor dolls available in my shop.
