I love wearing bold jewelry. This bracelet was crafted discount from vintage brass curb chain. The large, 25 mm links make a striking bracelet. The chain is finished with a vintage brass lobster clasp, attached to the chain with richly textured brass rings that complement the smooth links of the chain. The bracelet is accented with a beautiful cowrie shell, cast in brass. The cowrie was made by Ghanaian artisans using a centuries old lost-wax casting technique.
A symbol of wealth and power, the humble cowrie (or cowry) shell has a rich, long history. Until the twentieth century, it was one of the most successful universal forms of currency in the world.
The cowrie became ingrained in the cultural fiber of West Africa and took on a deeper symbolic meaning. Reminiscent of the pregnant female form, the cowrie symbolizes fertility.
It is also seen as a protective charm. Because the slit on the underside of the shell can look like the dark pupil of an eye against the pearly surface of the shell, the cowrie represents protection from the evil eye.
The finished bracelet is 8 ½ inches long and 25 mm (¾ inch) wide. It was sized to fit a 7 inch wrist and is intentionally designed to fit loosely. Wear it alone or layer it with a watch and/or other bracelets.
