LARGE gold BROOCH | Sphinx discount | Mid century modern | Abstract | Greek | Roman | Egyptian revival | Spiral | Swirl | Etruscan
Gorgeous large gold tone brooch, inspired by Greek designs and influenced by the 1960s Egptian revival.
Signed on reverse 'Made in England', and with a hand-etched number (624). I think it is made by the British jewellery designers Sphinx (they often numbered their brooches without signing them), but it is definitely made by discount one of the jewellery design houses working in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s.
The brooch is clearly inspired by the revival in Egyptian, Greek and Roman inspired fashion which took place after Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra film came out in 1963. It is made up of one large swirl shape, with a number of smaller spirals etched into it.
The brooch is plated with a gold colour (in a lovely matte antique colour), over a heavier metal which gives it a very solid and substantial feel.
7.5 cm long and 4.5 cm across.
In excellent overall condition. Some light wear to the surface when you look very closely, but this isn't really visible when worn, and there are no chips or scratches. The overall colour is still a lovely muted gold tone. Good strong clasp in full working order.
