MC Escher Hand with Reflecting discount Sphere. 1974 framed Dutch museum poster. MC Escher 1935 lithograph. Op art. Surrealist art. 36x18 inches.
This is an iconic framed under glass poster of MC Escher's surrealistic 1935 lithograph, Hand with Reflecting Sphere. The black and white poster is dated 1974 and was from a Dutch Museum having an Escher showing at the time. The print features Escher's own hand holding a glass sphere of a mirror image of himself sitting at his desk in his office facing the viewer extending his own hand to touch the hand on the outside of the globe. I think this piece is best interpreted by the view as many great art pieces are. I personally came up with five or six while just photographing it. The one I liked best was the idea of it playing with reality. Which is reality? Inside the sphere or out? Is the person in the sphere even vaguely aware of the person outside the sphere? Or are the two realities linked somehow as discount illustrated with the two mirror image hands touching at the tips. I can see why this piece is one of Escher's most popular.
Unsurprisingly, Escher was a Dutch mathematician whose art could not be singularly categorized and was not initially embraced by the art community. It wasn't until the hippie movement of the 1960s that Escher's dreamlike existential works became popularized.
This large piece measures: 26x18 inches. Excellent vintage condition. No damage.
