Fossil Urchin Hollowform Vessel - Cherry wood, carved and ebonized (6.5 diameter discount x 4.75 tall)
"Fossil Urchin" Hollowform Vessel - Cherry wood, carved and ebonized (6.5 diameter x 4.75 tall)
This cherry "hollow form" vessel is part of my "Driftwood Series" and has been carved, sandblasted, ebonized, whitewashed, sanded back, and then waxed & burnished. The black cherry wood was harvested from a tree that fell on a neighbor's home during Hurricane Florence in 2018. All my work has my Inso-surrounded Koch logo burned into the bottom assuring authenticity.
This wooden work of art is hand crafted by myself from discount sustainably sourced materials. I enjoy the process of revealing and celebrating each tree's history which is found in the color, grain, spalting, knots, bark inclusions, cracks, and yes, even insect tunnels. Every tree is unique and, therefore, so are the pieces that I craft from them. There are many steps in the process: cutting the log segments and bringing them back to my studio, carefully examining the wood to find the best way to show the wood's features and cutting it into workable billets, rough-turning, soaking, drying for months, finish turning, sanding and, when appropriate, sandblasting, carving, pyrography, dyeing, washing with color, finish coating, waxing, and buffing. My goal is to create simple but elegant forms that capture the complexity of the wood...and make it something that you will be proud to have displayed in your home or business.
If this piece is "almost" what you are looking for, then please take a look at my other available work. If you still do not see exactly what you want, I do accept commissioned work. Thank you for your time and attention.
